Model 31, also known as \" Spring Chair” or “Small Paimio”, was originally created in the early 1930s as part of Aalto’s complete architectural design for Paimio Sanatorium project (1928-1933). The Sanatorium was the first new building to be fully furnished by Aalto together with his wife Aino Aalto. In 1933, Model 31 was shown in London as part of the ‘Wood Only’ exhibition.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe design is a smaller cantilever version of Model 41 lounge chair “Paimio Chair”, the most famous and a masterpiece of furniture by Aalto from the project, which was used in the common rooms of the sanatorium. This armchair shares the same aesthetic of the “Paimio Chair”. It maintains the bent plywood seat\/back and laminated birch frame and creating a flowing organic form for ergonomic comfort and patient well-being.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe Model 31 (or sometimes called Model 31\/42) generally refers to an early variation of a small cantilever armchair.
