Kuba cloth originated in the 17th century in the Kuba kingdom of central Africa, in modern-day the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Kuba people are known for their elaboration and complexity of rhythmic design and bold abstract geometric surface decoration. Kuba cloths are woven from raffia (palm leaf) fiber on inclined heddle looms by men, and then expertly applied with intricate embroidery, appliqué and patchwork by women. Most cloths are a variation on rectangular or square pieces of woven on small looms, depending on the length of raffia, then sewn end to end to form it. Appliqué was originally a practical solution for mending small holes when the fabric was beaten after weaving, to make it soft and pliable.
