Dieter Rams is a renowned German industrial designer, known for his minimalist, functionalist and ecologically minded aesthetic approach to design. The Dieter Rams 620 Chair Programme was designed for Vitsœ in 1962, just two years after his 606 Universal Shelving System made its debut. Like the 606 shelving, the module seating system is a kit of parts that is easily configured in multiple ways from single chair to larger sofa and relocated with options for feet and castors.

Using a combination of traditional upholstery techniques and pioneering materials, the 620 exemplifies Rams' "less, but better" design principles of simplicity, longevity, and user-friendliness. The high-quality materials (many hidden from view), used throughout the manufacturing process of the chair, create timeless and enduring pieces, and the use of coil springs in the construction achieves a high level of comfort. The 620 was re-engineered and relaunched in 1974 and 2013, and it has been in continuous production since 1962.

The low-back armchairs are upholstered in leather with a shell made from a strong, hot-pressed sheet-moulding compound, fitted with feet and casters. Embossed Vitsoe logo to chair back moulding.

‘Buy fewer items of better quality, and to make them last longer’. Even after relocating its headquarters and production to the UK in 1995, Vitsœ continues to support its product, and most current components of the 620 are still compatible and replaceable whenever needed, allowing customers to replace the upholstery themselves in their own homes even after many years.

Rams’ ten principles of “good design” remain relevant today and have a major influence on modern furniture and product design, including at Apple. Less and More exhibition, which features his landmark designs for both Braun and Vitsœ, appeared at London's Design Museum, Frankfurt's Museum Angewandte Kunst, and San Francisco's MoMA.

ディーター・ラムスは、ミニマルで機能主義的、かつエコロジカルな美学的アプローチで知られるドイツの著名なインダストリアルデザイナーです。

ラムスの「620 チェア・プログラム」は、彼の代表作「606 ユニバーサルシェルフシステム」が発表されたわずか2年後の1962年にVitsœのためにデザインされました。606と同様に、このモジュール式シーティングシステムは、単体の椅子から大きなソファまで自在に構成でき、脚部やキャスターの選択によって移動や再配置も容易な“部品のキット”として設計されています。

伝統的な張り技術と先駆的な素材を組み合わせて生まれた620は、ラムスが掲げる「より少なく、しかしより良く」というデザイン原則――シンプルさ、長寿命、使いやすさ――を体現しています。製造工程全体で用いられる高品質な素材（多くは目に見えない部分にまで及ぶ）は、時代を超えて長く愛される家具を生み出し、コイルスプリングを採用した構造は高い快適性を実現しました。620は1974年と2013年に再設計・再発売され、1962年以来一貫して生産が続けられています。

ロータイプのアームチェアは革張りで、強靭なホットプレス成形コンパウンドによるシェルを備え、脚部とキャスターを装着しています。背面の成形部分にはVitsœのロゴがエンボス加工されています。「より少なく、より良質なものを買い、それを長く使う」。本社と生産拠点を1995年に英国へ移した後もVitsœは製品サポートを続けており、現在でも620の多くの部品は互換性を保ち、必要に応じて交換可能です。顧客は何年経っても自宅で自ら張地を交換できるように設計されています。

ラムスが提唱した「良いデザインの10原則」は、今日においても有効であり、Appleをはじめとする現代の家具・プロダクトデザインに大きな影響を与えています。彼の代表的なBraunおよびVitsœのデザインを紹介する展覧会 Less and More は、ロンドンのデザイン・ミュージアム、フランクフルトの応用美術館、サンフランシスコMoMAで開催されました。
