Early production Model 31 armchair, one of the iconic furniture works by Alvar Aalto, manufactured by O.Y. Huonekalu-ja Rakennustyötehdas A.B in the early 1930s for Artek. Model 31, also known as " Spring Chair” or “Small Paimio”, was originally created in the early 1930s as part of Aalto’s complete architectural design for Paimio Sanatorium project (1928-1933). The Sanatorium was the first new building to be fully furnished by Aalto together with his wife Aino Aalto. In 1933, Model 31 was shown in London as part of the ‘Wood Only’ exhibition.

The design is a smaller cantilever version of Model 41 lounge chair “Paimio Chair”, the most famous and a masterpiece of furniture by Aalto from the project, which was used in the common rooms of the sanatorium. This armchair shares the same aesthetic of the “Paimio Chair”. It maintains the bent plywood seat/back and laminated birch frame and creating a flowing organic form for ergonomic comfort and patient well-being.

The Model 31 (or sometimes called Model 31/42) generally refers to an early variation of a small cantilever armchair. This later led to the standardized Model 42 or "Small Paimio" produced by Artek, which is still produced in Finland today, while production of Model 31 discontinued.

This armchair was Imported into the UK in the 1930s by Finmar, the British distributor for Aalto’s furniture.
Underside of each leg impressed “10”.

本作は、アルヴァ・アアルトを代表する家具作品のひとつである《Model 31 アームチェア》の初期製造品です。1930年代初頭、Artekのために、*¹O.Y.フオネカル・ヤ・ラケンヌストーテハダス A.B. によって製作された作品。
Model 31は「スプリングチェア」あるいは「スモール・パイミオ」とも呼ばれ、1928年から1933年にかけて進められたパイミオ・サナトリウム計画の一環として、1930年代初頭にデザインされました。

パイミオ・サナトリウムは、アアルトが妻アイノ・アアルトとともに、建築から家具に至るまでトータルに設計した初めての建築作品。1933年には、本作がロンドンで開催された「Wood Only」展に出品されました。Model 31は、同計画の中で生まれた名作《Model 41 ラウンジチェア（パイミオ・チェア）》を小型化した片持ち構造のアームチェアです。パイミオ・チェアと同様、曲げ合板による座面・背もたれと、積層バーチ材のフレームを用い、有機的で流れるようなフォルムを生み出しています。

これらの要素は、人間工学に基づいた快適性と、療養者の身体的・精神的な安らぎを目的として設計されました。

Model 31（または Model 31/42 とも呼ばれる）は、小型の片持ちアームチェアの初期バリエーションを指し、その後、現在もフィンランドで生産が続けられているArtekの定番モデル《Model 42（スモール・パイミオ）》へと発展していきます。*なお、Model 31の生産は後に終了しています。

本作は1930年代に、アアルト家具の英国代理店であったFinmarを通じてイギリスに輸入され、脚部裏面には「10」の刻印が確認されています。


*¹フィンランドの有名な家具・建築製作業務を担った会社で、特にアルヴァ・アアルトなど著名デザイナーとの協業で、革新的な合板家具（曲げ木家具など）を製造し、世界的な評価を得たメーカー。
