Dining Chairs (His and Hers) designed by Rudolph M. Schindler, a proponent of Modernist architecture, California, c. 1946 - executed by Professor Lionel March, Maureen Mary Vidler, and Professor David Gebhard с. 1987.


These dining chairs formed part of a suite of furniture belonging to Lionel March, distinguished architect, mathematician and resident of How House by Schindler.

The original 12-piece set was commissioned in 1946 by Schindler's friend and client, Beata Inaya, for her Los Angeles apartment. After her death in 1991, it was passed on to her friend Lionel March and his wife, Maureen Mary Vidler.

March first offered the furniture to the V&A (Victoria and Albert Museum) in London in 2013; the museum accepted a writing desk, a coffee table and a chair as a gift for its collection. In 2014, the remaining nine pieces of furniture; a dining table, a dressing table, four chairs and three chests of drawers, were offered to the MAK (Museum of Applied Arts / Museum für angewandte Kunst) in Vienna, the city of Schindler’s birth, through the mediation of Christopher Wilk, curator at the V&A.

These dining chairs were part of the set recreated in c.1987 by graduate students of architecture at UCLA, under the direction of March with aid of Schindler expert Professor David Gebhard for the How House. They have come directly from the family of Lionel March, particularly granddaughter Ciana, who have had them in their home since the passing of Lionel in 2018.

The dining chairs made from four pieces of cut-out “wild grained” Douglas Fir plywood with solid pine elements as structural points, which Schindler scrubbed with a wire brush to bring out the grain and finished with a white/lime wash. Pieces are simply butt jointed with glue and nails. On the base of the chair are four circular rubber feet.

They have been referred to as "his" and "hers," but the original intent is unclear. The "hers" is the purer and more curvaceous of the two forms, made entirely from flat plywood elements. The "his" introduces a straight pine piece that thrusts forward at the base of the chair.

Schindler's furniture designs were always geometric and architectural. Simple shapes - straight line, rectangles, squares, semi-circles-were the basis of his designs.


Few drawings or documents are known to have survived about the furniture Schindler made for Inaya's apartment (drawings of the chairs survive at the University of California Santa Barbara, and one is published in Marla C. Berns, The Furniture of R.M. Schindler).

本作は、モダニズム建築を代表する建築家ルドルフ・M・シンドラーによって1946年頃にデザインされ、1987年頃にライオネル・マーチ教授、モーリーン・メアリー・ヴィドラー、デヴィッド・ゲブハード教授によって製作されたダイニングチェア「His and Hers」です。

これらのダイニングチェアは、シンドラー設計によるハウ・ハウスに居住していた、建築家であり数学者でもあるライオネル・マーチの家具一式の一部を成していました。オリジナルの12点からなる家具セットは、1946年にシンドラーの友人でありクライアントでもあったベアタ・イナヤが、ロサンゼルスの自邸のために依頼したものです。イナヤの死去（1991年）後、家具は彼女の友人であるライオネル・マーチとその妻モーリーン・メアリー・ヴィドラーへと引き継がれました。

2013年、マーチはこの家具をロンドンのヴィクトリア＆アルバート博物館（V&A）に提案し、ライティングデスク、コーヒーテーブル、椅子1点が寄贈品として同館のコレクションに収蔵。その後2014年には、ダイニングテーブル、ドレッシングテーブル、椅子4脚、チェスト3点からなる残り9点が、V&Aのキュレーターであるクリストファー・ウィルクの仲介により、シンドラーの生誕地であるウィーンのMAK（応用美術博物館）へと提供されます。

本作のダイニングチェアは、1987年頃にUCLA（カリフォルニア大学ロサンゼルス校）の建築学専攻の大学院生たちによって、マーチの指導のもと、シンドラー研究者であるデヴィッド・ゲブハード教授の協力を得て、ハウ・ハウスのために再制作されたセットの一部です。これらはマーチの家族、とりわけ2018年に彼が亡くなって以降、孫娘のシアナ・マーチのもとで大切に保管されてきたものです。

素材には、木目の強いダグラスファー合板を切り出した4枚のパネルを用い、構造部分には無垢のパイン材が使われています。シンドラーはワイヤーブラシで表面を擦り、木目を際立たせたうえで、ホワイト／ライムウォッシュ仕上げを施しました。接合は接着剤と釘によるシンプルな突き合わせ構造で、脚部底面には4つの円形ゴム製フットが取り付けられています。

これらの椅子は「His」と「Hers」と呼ばれていますが、その名称の由来は明確ではありません。「Hers」はより純粋で曲線的なフォルムを持ち、すべて平面合板のみで構成されています。一方「His」は、座面下部に前方へ突き出す直線的なパイン材を取り入れた構造となっています。

シンドラーの家具デザインは常に幾何学的かつ建築的であり、直線、矩形、正方形、半円といったシンプルな形態がその造形の基盤となっています。

イナヤのアパートメントのために制作されたシンドラーの家具に関する図面や資料は、現存するものが非常に限られていますが、椅子の図面はカリフォルニア大学サンタバーバラ校に所蔵されており、その一部はマルラ・C・バーンズ著『The Furniture of R.M. Schindler』にも掲載されています。
