The calabash is a ceremonial hollowed gourd vessel, crafted by the Tutsi people of Rwanda. The vessels are polished with umuseno leaves and graphically hand painted with a soot-based substance. Each vessel has a unique, naturally graceful shape and a beautifully smooth, warm reddish-brown surface patina.

The vessels are maintained with the care and even little cracks repaired. Small holes are drilled on each side of the crack with a fist, tsinké, and the edges are then joined with fine strands of plant fibre, usually the root of kaba or beaten acacia root.

The calabashes are not only functional vessels but also important artifacts in Tutsi ceremonies and cultural events, embodying the rich cultural traditions and artistic skills of the Tutsi community.


Condition:

In good condition with wear commensurate with tribal use. Natural imperfections to surface.

ツチ族（Tutsi People）

ヒョウタン（Calabash）

本作は、ルワンダのツチ族によって制作された、儀礼用の中空のヒョウタン容器です。
表面はウムセノの葉で磨き上げられ、煤を用いた顔料でグラフィカルな手描き装飾が施されています。ひとつひとつが自然に生まれた優美なフォルムを持ち、滑らかで温かみのある赤褐色の経年変化が魅力です。

これらの容器は丁寧に手入れされ、使用や経年によって生じた小さな割れも修復されてきました。割れの両端には小さな穴が開けられ、*ツィンケ（tsinké）*と呼ばれる手法により、カバの根や叩いたアカシアの根などの植物繊維で縁が繋ぎ合わされています。

カラバッシュは実用的な器であると同時に、ツチ族の儀礼や文化的行事において重要な役割を担う存在であり、豊かな文化的伝統と高度な手仕事の技を今に伝える貴重な民具です。


コンディション：
部族社会での使用に伴う摩耗が見られますが、概ね良好な状態です。
表面には自然素材ならではの不完全さが残されています。
