Shaker boxes originate from the everyday tools of the Shakers, a Christian religious community that existed in the United States during the 18th and 19th centuries. Valuing lives of simplicity and diligence, the Shakers made what they needed by hand, arriving at forms that were neither excessive nor lacking.

Their construction—bending thinly shaved wood such as cherry and joining it without adhesives, using copper tacks and wooden pegs—follows traditional techniques passed down since the 18th century. Stripped of ornament, these restrained forms embody the Shaker belief that “beauty resides in utility,” quietly conveying a way of thinking in which faith, daily life, and craftsmanship were deeply intertwined.

シェーカーボックスは、18～19世紀のアメリカに存在したキリスト教宗派「シェーカー教徒（Shakers）」の生活道具に由来します。質素で勤勉な暮らしを重んじた彼らは、日常に必要なものを自らの手で作り出し、その中から過不足のないかたちを導き出してきました。

接着剤を用いず、薄く挽いた木材（チェリー材など）を曲げ、銅の鋲やダボ（木栓）によって接合する構造は、18世紀から受け継がれてきた伝統的な製法に基づくものです。装飾を排した簡潔な造形には、「美は有用性に宿る」というシェーカーの理念が体現されており、信仰と生活、そしてものづくりが一体であった彼らの思想を、今に静かに伝えています。
